In her Fall/Winter 2008 collection, Catherine Malandrino evokes the sensuality of the Mediterranean coast. A European revelry melts into prints reminiscent of mosaic and murano glass.
An organic palette of pomegranate, herb and lava is tempered by deep grey and all shades of greens to khaki. Bold cashmere, striped knit, silk jersey, wool jacquard and silk chiffon are linked to glove leather. A high-waisted pencil skirt paired with a mini sweater and a micro jacket are a statement of sleek sophistication, while a long sleeve shirt dress in silk satin, printed chiffon and wool gauze is a new day dress. Emphasis is placed on the shoulder through draping, long sleeves and bijoux embellishments.
True to her Murano inspiration, Catherine Malandrino’s collection illustrates the full range of refined sensibilities for a sensuous, polished and opulent fall silhouette.

Fall 2008
For the fall 2008 L.A.M.B. collection, Gwen was inspired by the land, colors and textures of Africa. “I love the idea of “European safari in the 1970’s, the mix of contemporary Western fashion with traditional African costume,” said Stefani.
This seasons fabrics include stretch wools, cotton polyester and heathered fleece. The signature L.A.M.B. use of black and white has been supplemented with deep mocha and ivy, shades of gray, brights and jewel tones. As always, Gwen’s collection features unique prints, including African and “L.A.M.B. Around the World” prints, in addition to hand painted, dip dye and ombre patterns. However, plaids remain key for the collection this season, which features Nightfall Plaid in orange and navy, Mini Tooth in brown and teal and Herringbone Plaid in mocha and teal. There is a focus on sleeves this season; many are wide and dramatic, from batwing, dolman and kimono styles featured in tops to oversize bell and balloon sleeves on coats and jackets. The silhouettes include classic, feminine L.A.M.B. staples like pencil skirts and modern dresses but many of the jackets and pants feature adaptations on 1970’s menswear tailoring. The dichotomy represents the L.A.M.B. girl who is chic, complex and sophisticated.
As creative director of L.A.M.B., Gwen is hands-on and fully involved in every step of the design process. Widely recognized for her unique personal style and natural elegance, Gwen’s style is something that is never constant, but rather is ever changing as she designs each season drawing inspiration from all areas of her life. “L.A.M.B. evolves so much every season, says Gwen and with each collection I feel like I grow and mature as a designer.”
L.A.M.B. is a reflection of Gwen’s unique personal style, and is expressed in the many varying components that define her iconic look. The creation of L.A.M.B. (an acronym for Love Angel Music Baby) was a natural progression for Gwen, who has designed her own clothing her entire life, creating much of her tour wardrobe for No Doubt as well as her career as a solo artist.

We have a special window display at the store this week. Two local fashion design students brought their garments for us to display during Geneva’s annual Swedish Days Festival which is this week. Below is a write up from the students. If you live in the area stop by and see the designs. We will be adding pictures to this post tomorrow.
“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening .”
~ Coco Chanel
Fashion, much like any other art form, has at the center of it’s purpose the desire to create an impact in how we feel and to increase our awareness of our surroundings. Art can be found in anything that surrounds us and often forces us to focus on something we might not otherwise see. Similarly, fashion is designed to create a feeling not only in the wearer but also upon the observer. In the combination of fashion and art the unexpected itself becomes the norm.
Art and fashion design students, in their learning process, are often presented with challenges to overcome. In the field of fashion design, these challenges are most commonly in the form of design or construction and fit. However, on occasion, students are granted the opportunity to turn challenges into true creative opportunities.
Students attending the College of DuPage Fashion Design program were asked to create garments from non-traditional materials, forcing them to use anything and everything other than fabric, ribbons, and other materials commonly employed by the fashion design industry. Some of these garments were highlighted during the annual fashion show in May 2008.
The garments:
The two garments presented were constructed by first-year students attending the Fashion Design and Merchandising program at the College of DuPage. Both are constructed using non-traditional materials including screen mesh, metal washers, cork, etc. Garments are designed as wearable pieces, yet using materials that make one look twice and realize the piece might not be wearable but is, indeed, a work of art.
